ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic urges hospitality and tourism businesses to design innovative responses to rapid competition and challenges. This study begins by finding out how innovation-based collaboration, perceived status certainty, and adaptation to digital technology jointly encourage higher levels of innovative business response to the COVID-19 outbreak under complexity aspects. The findings indicate that adaptation to digital technology, perceived status certainty, and innovation-based collaboration have a strong influence on configuring innovative business responses. This paper provides new insights into how the complexity of human-related, environment-related, and technology-related factors predict the innovative response of business providers in the tourism and hospitality industries. © 2023 World Scientific Publishing Company.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: While business intelligence and analytic (BIA) systems have been developed by large corporations around the world, micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) have recently paid attention and deployed BIA adoption, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic disruption. This study sheds light on how MSMEs adopt the BIA systems and then proposes a framework for the BIA adoption process in the context of MSMEs. Design/methodology/approach: The multiple case research design and interpretivism approach are employed for expanding the theoretical boundary of the strategic management fields in BIA adoption by MSMEs. In total, 35 semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior managers and owners involved in BIA adoption from 17 participating MSMEs. Findings: The research study identifies three BIA adoption stages with specific technical and managerial features in the path of BIA adoption in each stage, corresponding to the level of BIA maturity of MSMEs. The authors also highlight other factors that directly influence the successful adoption and transformation from each stage to another. Research limitations/implications: The research study identifies three BIA adoption stages with specific technical and managerial features in the path of BIA adoption at each stage that corresponds to the level of BIA maturity of MSMEs. Besides, this study also extends the current literature on BIA adoption in an organisation during the Covid-19 pandemic by identifying several contextual barriers that directly influence the BIA adoption. Practical implications: Research findings can help business leaders and owners of MSMEs to determine the BIA maturity of their organisation. Furthermore, the authors' framework can also be used by consultancies and standard setters to develop detailed BIA adoption strategies and tactics that support MSMEs' digitalisation towards BIA adoption. Originality/value: The research study's results highlight that contextual factors, leadership competencies, motivations and barriers for BIA adoption can also be used to help MSMEs' leaders and owners to trigger, advance or eliminate challenges for the adoption of BIA initiatives in MSMEs. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impacts of crude oil-market-specific fundamental factors and financial indicators on the realized volatility of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price. A time-varying parameter vector autoregression model with stochastic volatility (TVP-VAR-SV) is applied to weekly data series spanning January 2008 to October 2021. It is found that the WTI oil price volatility responds positively to a shock in oil production, oil inventories, the US dollar index, and VIX but negatively to a shock in the US economic activity. The response to the EPU index was initially positive and then turned slightly negative before fading away. The VIX index has the most significant effect. Furthermore, the time-varying nature of the response of the WTI realized oil price volatility is evident. Extreme effects materialize during economic recessions and crises, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings can improve our understanding of the time-varying nature and determinants of WTI oil price volatility. © 2022

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 is not merely a global health crisis, but a comprehensive socio-economic disaster worldwide due to its multidimensional impacts and wide-range consequences for most countries. As a middle-income country in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has been suffering from the multifaceted consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and has made the most significant effort to respond. In response to challenges caused by Covid 19, Vietnam has been trying to introduce social protection policies to support the COVID-19 affected groups. The study conducted 58 in-depth interviews with different representatives from policymakers, policy implementors at different levels, and beneficiaries (the poor, persons with disabilities, informal/freelance workers and so on) to draws a picture of the pandemic impacts via the voices of different stakeholders. It then describes how the government and community' social protection policies are responding to manage the pandemic and its multidimensional impacts. The paper highlights and discusses the lessons from Vietnamese experiences.

ABSTRACT

The tourism industry has changed at its core in response to the emergence of economic vitality, climate change, and notably the recent COVID-19 outbreak. This study’s objectives are (1) to examine the factors affecting tourists’ destination choices, including their information sources, their perceptions of their destinations, and their perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact and (2) to determine which of these factors play the most critical mediating role (i.e., perception of COVID-19 pandemic impact or perception of destination) in the relationship between information source and destination choice. Data from an online survey data of 645 respondents from Vietnam and MTurk were analyzed using SPSS version 22, Smart PLS 2.0 and Hayes Process 3.5. Our empirical findings suggest that (1) information source positively influences destination choice, (2) perception of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact acts as a key mediator in the relationship between information sources and destination choices, and (3) perception of destination ranked first as the most vital factor in tourists’ destination choices. Our studies also discovered that the relationship from Information sources-> Perception of destination-> Destination choice is the strongest effect on travelers among the three indirect relationship. Our research will be of the greatest benefits to tourism stakeholders or tourism businesses as a foundation for further exploration into consumers’ behavior and attitudes toward destinations and help them to promote efficient emergency-response plans. © 2022 The Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Background: Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has been used as standard to improve diagnostic yield and to triage samples for additional testing. A method has been prompted to leveraging the expertise of cytotechnologists only or the utility of tele cytology. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our institution had to discontinue ROSE for EBUS-TBNA, and instead adopted a direct-to-cellblock approach. This study aims to determine if removing ROSE affected the adequacy of samples obtained from the EBUS-TBNA cases, and if this new approach should be employed continuously for an extended period without jeopardizing the standard of care to the patient since we are still in the pandemic. Design: We collected data of total 1903 EBUS-TBNA cases from 734 patients. 1097 cases were performed from 1/2019 to 3/2020 with ROSE on 452 patients;806 cases were performed between 4/2020 to 12/2020 without ROSE on 282 patients, and the sample was sent directly to be processed as a cell block. Data variables collected included patient's age and gender, specimen sites and frequencies, and final cytopathological diagnosis. Calculated standardized residuals and fitted multivariate generalized linear model were performed at Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute Biostats Core using software SAS 9.4. Results: On average, holding specimen site variable constant, a biopsy from a patient with ROSE is 0.936 (=exp -0.066) times less likely to be reported as 'Satisfactory' as compared to a biopsy taken from a patient without ROSE, and this difference is not statistically significant (p = 0.785). Among all 6 categories of diagnosis, biopsies reported as 'Diagnostic for malignancy' are significantly different between ROSE and no ROSE groups with the standardized residual of 1.80 (p = 0.036) & only other significantly different category was 'Other';however, a very small number of biopsies were reported in this category (3.5%). Conclusions: The inadequacy rate of EBUS-TBNA was 6.4% higher on average in cases with ROSE when compared to a directto- cell block approach in this data set, however this difference was not statistically significant. This suggests that ROSE could be discontinued in favor of a direct-to-cell block approach. Although additional studies are needed, the discontinuation of ROSE for EBUS-TBNA would decrease the time and cost burden on cytopathology service while providing the same quality of care to the patient. ABSTRACT

Digital social networking platforms become the mechanism for fans and celebrities to have digital communication and interation. Marketers and celebrities may take advantage of this opportunity to promote merchandise to consumers and fans by leveraging the wishful identification and parasocial relationship between digital celebrities and their followers. This study investigates the effect of wishful identification on parasocial relationships, which then enhance behavioral loyalty and purchase intentions sequentially. An online survey was administered to 300 Vietnamese social network sites (SNS) users, who were following digital celebrities. The statistical results indicate that higher levels of wishful identification positively associated with higher levels of parasocial relationship, which then trigger higher levels of behavioral loyalty and purchase intention sequentially. This study therefore sheds light on fans’ behavioral loyalty with digital celebrities through their purchase identification during Covid-19 time. © 2021 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the status quo and identify the challenges and benefits of the digital transformation in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. The six participating SMEs were purposely contacted, and they were either nominated for, or received the Vietnam Digital Awards in 2018, 2019 and 2020, which were held by the Vietnam Digital Communication Association (http://en.vdca.org.vn/). A qualitative research method is adopted, using a semi-structured interview method and a theoretical triangulation of legitimacy, stakeholder and stewardship theories to facilitate the investigation. This research tries to identify the current challenges and benefits for digital transformation of SMEs in Vietnam, based on perception and experience from business leaders and managers from six SMEs in Vietnam. The findings of this study reveal that besides the recent challenges for digital transformation, participants also experienced and shared their perspectives regarding the benefits received from the digital transformation journey of their organization, which varied from (i) improve operational as well as business functions;(ii) liberate staffs and managers from daily work and allows them to focus on decision-making tasks;(iii) enable solutions to deal with consequences from the COVID-19 pandemic;(iv) enhance value creation process;and (v) help firms to align with the global business standards.

ABSTRACT

This commentary reflects on recent instances of anti-Asian violence and state responses to redress violence through data-driven strategies. Data collection often presents itself as an appealing strategy, due to impacted communities’ desires for evidence and metrics to substantiate political claims. Yet, data collection can bolster the carceral state. This commentary takes an antagonistic approach to policing, including the ongoing creation of data infrastructures by—and for—law enforcement through hate crimes legislation. We critically discuss the challenges and possibilities in building towards anti-carceral responses amidst ongoing racial violence and crisis. © The Author(s) 2021.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This research aims to examine the unique emotional distress experienced during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. It explores the role of fear and anxiety, what fueled it and how fear and anxiety impacted consumption and behaviors of conformity and compliance. Design/methodology/approach: An exploratory assessment of the emotions and behaviors of individuals during the early part of the coronavirus outbreak (early March 2020) was conducted by sending a questionnaire to a national panel (n = 42). The insight offered from these individuals, in conjunction with prior literature, provided the basis for the development of a conceptual model that was tested using survey methodology (n = 691). Findings: Both exploratory and empirical research indicate that ruminative thoughts were positively related to feelings of fear and anxiety, whereas trust in leadership was negatively related to fear and anxiety. Feelings of fear and anxiety were also associated with purchasing in large quantities, in compliance with guidelines to slow the spread of the virus and the management of negative feelings through consumption. Practical implications: Important insight for marketers and public policymakers in how fear and anxiety might be both tempered and mitigated during emergencies is offered. Originality/value: This research provides new insight into what fuels fear and anxiety during a pandemic and investigates how fear and anxiety impacts consumption and behaviors of conformity and compliance. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.
